When a new public space is built, protection is often thought of in physical terms.
Fences.
Security.
Rules.
But over time, it becomes clear that these alone are not what keep a space safe and well-maintained.
Because a space can be fenced… and still be neglected.
It can be guarded… and still be misused.
What makes the difference is something less visible. Whether people feel like the space belongs to them. When a community is only introduced to a space after it is complete, the relationship is often distant. People use it. But they don’t necessarily feel responsible for it. But when communities are involved from the very beginning, something shifts.
Not just being informed.
Not just being consulted.
But actively participating in shaping what the space becomes.
Ideas are shared.
Decisions are influenced.
Effort is contributed.
And when people see their input reflected in the final outcome, the space no longer feels external. It feels familiar. It feels claimed. That sense of connection changes behaviour.
People notice when something is wrong.
They are more likely to speak up.
More likely to intervene.
More likely to take care of what exists.
Not because they were instructed to. But because they feel part of it. This is why some public spaces remain active, clean and respected over time… while others gradually decline, even when the physical infrastructure is similar. The difference is not always in the design.
It is in the relationship between the space and the people who use it.
Involving communities early does more than improve ideas. It builds ownership. And ownership is what turns a public space from something people simply use… into something they choose to protect. Because when people feel that a space belongs to them, protection does not have to be enforced.
