Designing Dandora’s Future: How Nairobi Residents Are Co-Creating A Community Park For Inclusive Urban Growth.

In Dandora, a quiet revolution in inclusive urban planning is unfolding, one meeting at a time.
Last month, community members and PSN facilitators gathered around a 3D model of the proposed Dandora Community Park Amphitheater. It looked like a small, detailed landscape made of paper and clay. In truth, it was a vision of transformation taking shape in the hands of the people who will live it.

As community members examined the model closely, the conversation quickly turned from design to purpose. Parents imagined shaded areas where families sit together. Young people talked about the need for open play spaces that are safe and accessible. The whole community agreed that lighting is essential to make the park feel secure for everyone, even after dark.

Each idea shared that day was more than feedback. It was a sign of ownership. This is what community-led public space transformation looks like in practice.

The public participation session was not only about what to build but also about how to care for it. Questions filled the air:
Will the washrooms be accessible for people with disabilities?
Where will spectators sit during matches?
What about clean water, first aid, and safe disposal areas for sanitary towels?

These were not ideas drafted in a boardroom. They came from lived experience and from residents who understand what makes a public space feel welcoming and dignified.

For PSN, this process shows the future of urban transformation and equity. Instead of imposing ready-made designs, the organization nurtures community co-creation. This ensures every corner of a public space reflects local priorities.

“Before, projects like this used to come and go,” said one resident. “Now, we feel like it’s ours from the start.”

The amphitheater will soon become a centerpiece for Dandora’s growing network of sustainable, climate-resilient public spaces. It is being designed not just for performance, but for participation, safety, and belonging. And as the 3D model session showed, transformation does not start with construction; it begins with conversation.
