Reimagining Dandora Park Together! What Would You Add to Make It Even Better?

Have you ever thought about how your neighborhood park could become a place everyone loves even more? Recently, the Public Space Network team visited Dandora Community Park to discuss exciting plans and the budget needed to make these ideas come true. Dandora Community Park is more than just a green space it is a vital hub where children play, families gather, and the community connects. One important part of the visit was to explore how to make the park safer. Currently, safety measures include community-led watch groups and regular maintenance patrols to keep an eye on the park after dark. The team is working to install better lighting throughout the park to help prevent accidents and stop people from causing damage. They also plan to fix broken fences and improve access points to control who enters and leaves the park, making it safer for everyone.

Keeping the park clean is another big focus. Right now, locals regularly organize clean-up days to pick up trash and sweep paths. However, more is needed. PSN and the community are proposing to install more waste bins to reduce littering and partner with local waste management services to improve garbage collection. Educational campaigns are also planned to encourage all visitors to take care of the space. The park’s unique history makes it a special place to invest in. This land was once part of the Dandora dumpsite, the largest dumpsite in Nairobi, where thousands lived and worked amidst waste. Over the years, through community efforts and support from local organizations, it has transformed into a green and welcoming public space. Honoring this history, the park plans include a railway-themed kiosk near the station area to remember the neighborhood’s role as a key transport hub that helped move goods and people across Nairobi.

The meeting also covered plans to improve the playground so kids can run and play safely, expand community gardens where neighbors grow vegetables and spices, and create quiet spots like the mental health corner, which is planned to have an outdoor library and board games. Imagine children picking a book under a tree or old friends enjoying a peaceful game together. Most excitingly, PSN wants to invite all community members, local leaders, and government officials to a public event soon. During this event, everyone will be able to see the updated design plans, share their ideas, and help decide how the park should look for years to come. What would you add to the park to make it your favorite place? A safe bike path? A flower garden? Your voice truly matters. While the team knows there are challenges, such as keeping the park tidy and safe, this budget meeting is a big step toward turning these ideas into action. With the right funding and partnerships, Dandora Community Park can continue to grow as a safe, clean, and joyful space for everyone.

So keep an eye out for more updates, get ready to join the conversation, and watch as Dandora Community Park grows into a place that reflects your dreams and the spirit of the whole neighborhood.
