What Turns a Functional Public Space Into One That Lasts Long-Term?

Kamukunji Sports Ground was never empty.

Youth played. Matches happened. The community used the space. But there is a difference between a space that works and a space that is built to hold up over time.

For years, the football pitch was a rough murrum surface. It did the job but came with limits: dust during dry weather and uneven footing in some areas. It was functional but not built for long-term durability. The upgrade to a fully carpeted turf surface did not create increased activity from nothing. It raised the standard.

A stronger surface means more consistent play, better handling of weather, and the ability to support organised matches and regular training. When infrastructure improves, community expectations shift. Players show up knowing the ground is reliable. Coaches plan ahead. The space feels cared for, and when people feel that care, they are more likely to contribute in looking after it.

Quality influences behaviour and behaviour influences how long a space lasts. This upgrade is part of the wider Kamukunji Catalytic Project, where public space is treated as serious neighbourhood infrastructure rather than a temporary fix. The real question is not whether a space can be used today, but whether it will still be serving the community years from now. A rough pitch can host a game, but a well-built one can support consistent play, organised matches, regular training and long-term care.

What turns a functional public space into one that lasts long-term? Not just activity. Not just enthusiasm. It is the decision to raise the standard of infrastructure from the beginning. We continue documenting how public space upgrades across Nairobi are improving not only how neighbourhoods look, but how communities use, protect and benefit from them over time.
