This Is What Community-Driven Climate Action Looks Like, And How It’s Changing Life in Nairobi’s Neighborhoods

Remember when we told you that Public Space Network was working to strengthen your community’s resilience to climate change? That journey has now entered its next phase. After training a team of facilitators through the Training of Trainers (TOT) program, those trainers are now in session with community-based groups along the Nairobi River. This marks the launch of the second cohort of the Climate Change Adaptation Academy, organized by Public Space Network in partnership with Dreamtown. Representatives from three Kamukunji-based groups; Badilisha Mtaa, BRICS and Kinyago United, joined the session. These groups are already active in environmental stewardship along the Nairobi River, and now they are deepening their expertise in adaptation planning.

Do you remember when we said the academy has six modules?…Good job for keeping up! The very first module focused on Introduction to Climate Change Concepts, Adaptation Tools, and Scenario Planning. Over two days, participants explored climate change causes and effects through interactive group work, assessed their community’s strengths and weaknesses using SWOT analysis. They also did participatory mapping and practiced future scenario planning, imagining worst-case, best-case, and “business-as-usual” climate futures; and strategies for moving toward a transformative future. This wasn’t just about theory; it was about linking the science of climate change with local knowledge and everyday realities. This academy represents a shift. Trainers are now building the capacity of local groups, who will in turn lead efforts within their own neighborhoods. By strengthening grassroots leadership, the academy ensures resilience is not only planned, but lived.

Curious about who’s behind the training? Don’t wait! Head over to this post and meet the amazing facilitators in action.
